“Jacksonville is the coolest place in the U.S.!” — Todd Solondz, Director: WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, WIENER-DOG
We’ve had the privilege of hosting a number of talented filmmakers, actors, and musicians here at Sun-Ray Cinema, but only one of our guests has ever been recognized and greeted by a friendly Jacksonville resident before even stepping out of the airport. That guest wasn’t a wrestling legend, or someone who’s appeared in cartoon form on the longest running animated show on television, or even the face of a giant indie-crossover hit, fresh off a national morning show appearance.
“Welcome to Jacksonville, Mr. Solondz,” said the Jacksonville International Airport employee freshening up the men’s room to the director of HAPPINESS, the film we screened on 35mm . “See you tonight.”
In January 2015 Todd Solondz joined us at Sun-Ray to introduce his 1998 film and hosted a Q&A with the lively and thoughtful audience after the show. Between the warm reception from Jacksonville’s many fans of seriously black comedy, the rave reviews he gave some of our finest Bombaymeadows cuisine and then hearing about our recent celebration of Jacksonville’s own Wakefield Poole it appears humble old Cowford has gotten stuck in the craw of the filmmaker who over twenty years has become an expert in taking moviegoers to a “sad, wacky universe of alienated individuals.” (Indiewire)
WIENER-DOG is no exception, and in fact Indiewire also says it “marks the most radical, angry achievement in Solondz’s career to date. And it might be his most pointed one, as well.” As we kick off the theatrical run of the kinda-sorta-sequel to WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE Todd Solondz will again visit us at Sun-Ray Cinema on opening night for a chat.
